Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Survey Data
Information Technology Services
coordinates University of California survey responses for the Integrated Postsecondary Education
Data System (IPEDS), the core postsecondary education data collection program for the National
Center for Education Statistics (NCES). IPEDS comprises nine surveys, covering student, personnel
and financial data, collected during three separate periods. Analysts in IR&C's
Data Warehouse and Corporate Systems unit coordinate all responses for the ten campuses and the Office of the President. Copies of recent submissions are provided below.
Completions - Counts of degrees conferred by gender,
race/ethnicity, degree level, and academic discipline (detailed) for the academic year.
Surveys for previous academic year are posted around March. Note that completions for an academic
year are included in the next year's IPEDS survey. EX: "Completions 2006-07" in the Survey title
refers to 2005-2006 completions.
Employees by Assigned
Position - Employees by full-time/part-time status, faculty
status, occupational activity, and tenure.
Enrollment - Fall headcount enrollment by gender, race/ethnicity,
full-time/part-time status, level, and discipline; headcount enrollment by age, full-time/part-time
status and level; headcount enrollment of first-time undergraduates by state of residence;
prior-year 12-month unduplicated enrollment and instructional activity by race/ethnicity, gender,
and level. Surveys for current academic year are posted around June.
Note: As of Fall 2003, health sciences residents are excluded
from campus enrollment reports, but not from the system-wide summary.
Finance - Revenues
by source; scholarship and fellowship expenditures; expenditures
by function; indebtedness on physical plant; details of endowment
assets; hospital revenues; physical plant assets; interest
earnings/cash/security data; tax receipts and capital outlay
expenditures, revenue, expenditure and indebtedness.Surveys for previous fiscal year
are posted around June.
Financial Aid -
Counts of first-time, full-time degree seeking undergraduates
by residency, number receiving aid and average aid amount by
aid type. Surveys for previous academic year are posted around June.
Graduation Rates -
Cohort completions of bachelor's degrees by time to degree,
degree goal, race/ethnicity, gender, and receipt of athletically-related
student aid for specified sports. Surveys for last seven year cohort are posted around June.
Human Resources
- Employees by Assigned Position, Salaries,
and Fall Staff surveys have been combined into one Human
Resources survey. The surveys provided here have been

faculty by race/ethnicity, gender, academic rank and tenure;
new hires by race/ethnicity, gender, and occupational activity.
The Staff survey
is only required for odd-numbered years.

- Educational offerings; organization and accreditation;
admission requirements; student charges; additional information.Surveys for current academic year
are posted around March.
Salaries - Headcount
of full-time instructional faculty and total/average salary
outlays by length of contract, gender and academic rank; headcount
of full-time instructional faculty and total/average benefit
expenditures by benefit type and length of contract.
Staff - Headcount of
full-time faculty, other full-time employees by race/ethnicity,
gender, occupational activity and salary range; part-time employees
by race/ethnicity, gender, and occupational activity; full-time
faculty by race/ethnicity, gender, academic rank and tenure;
new hires by race/ethnicity, gender, and occupational activity.
(The Staff survey was not required for October 2002.)
Note: The October 2001 Fall Staff survey
included employees of the medical centers and auxiliary enterprises,
so the counts were significantly higher than in 2003, when
these employees were excluded.
